Do you recommend an engagement session?

I think an engagement session is a really good idea. I don’t think it’s an essential thing but it offers a nice opportunity for the couple and myself to spend some time together and bond a bit. The couple gets used to having their picture taken and I get to see how they interact and what they’re like together, so I can be best prepared for the wedding. So, I think it’s a worthwhile thing to do.

At first it feels a little bit awkward and you’re not sure what to do; are you supposed to pose in a certain way so all of that is what we work through on the engagement sessions.

I think it’s worthwhile in that sense. I always tell couples, I don’t need them to be models or know how to pose in a certain way, all I ask from couples is to enjoy themselves and be themselves. That’s all they have to do to get great photos. It’s my job to find the right angles, the right light, to make them feel comfortable so I don’t need couples to do anything special to get great photos other than just enjoy themselves and have a good time.

I think one of the best things that you get from the engagement session is that couples see the photos afterwards, and they realize, wow, we look really good actually and all we had to do was just enjoy each other’s company and be ourselves. It’s a good confidence builder, to see the photos afterwards and to realize that you look great. Couples know going into the wedding photos that it’s easy, they have the confidence that they’re going to look great in the photos.
